Digitalization in enterprises: 6 tips for the modernization of professional development

Digitalization is a trend, that cannot be stopped. According to estimations, in 2007 already 94% of the worldwide technological information capacity was digital (Martin Hilbert: The world’s technological capacity to store, communicate, and compute information). But digitalization is not merely changing the way how we store, process and consume information, but every area of human interaction: the way we communicate, learn, shop and spend our leisure time.

Especially in economics it becomes clear, how massive the change through digitalization is. Traditional industry and service branches are being altered severely by rapidly growing digital start-ups (disruption). A company like Uber, that does not own a single taxi, has an estimated market worth of about 70 billion dollars. Airbnb does not own any hotels or guesthouses and is worth approximately 31 billion dollars. The digital companies Apple, Google, Microsoft and Facebook are on the first 4 places of the Forbes list of the most valuable brands worldwide. 30 years ago, not many people would have considered such a huge paradigm shift possible.

The digitalization of professional development in enterprises

The topic of digitalization is especially important in education, since learning and teaching are often accompanied by the use of media of various kinds. The classic schoolbook becomes less important, because digital media are becoming more and more popular. The digitalization of on-the-job training poses many challenges for employees and organizations:

  • For the handling of new technologies, all employees need new core competencies (general media literacy, flexibility, multidisciplinarity)
  • The infrastructure of the company-owned knowledge management has to be modernized
  • To ensure that executives have an accurate overview over their employees' knowledge level, digital talent management should be integrated
  • Employees' needs for further education must be recognized as early as possible
  • New training projects must be planned centrally and be executed quickly, if required by the frame conditions
  • The willingness for constant development should be promoted and integrated into corporate culture
  • The internal knowledge must be kept up-to-date and preserved centrally in digital form

Depending on the initial situation of a corporation, the adaption of these aspects comes with a lot of effort. But it is worth the trouble: a company that accomplishes the leap into the digital age, with excellently trained employees and the ability to react flexibly on changing conditions, has a tremendous advantage over competitors, that are less agile.

Digitalization in further education

We have compiled 6 tips for the digitalization of company training:

1) Use a learning management system with talent management options

For the administration and distribution of the internal knowledge, a learning management system is a good choice. It is an online platform that can be used to organize and host all digital learning matter, ranging from eLearning courses (web-based trainings) over training videos, glossaries, Pdf-files, learning games and online tests up to the organization of class-room training. If the LMS has talent management capacities, it is possible to create a profile that contains all individual skills and competences for every employee. Thus, the training officers can easily identify company-wide training needs and react with the development of target-oriented learning offers.

2) Help new employees integrate with premium onboarding

To help new employees assimilate into your company from the first day on, the development of a comprehensive onboarding training is a very good option. Using various types of media, the new colleagues get to know the corporate culture in an exciting, versatile way. Thus, they gain a good overview of the most important aspects of their new working environment, which has a strong positive effect on their motivation and commitment to the company.

3) Use performance support to increase efficiency in all work processes

Performance support means contextual, direct assistance during work processes. The most frequent questions can be tackled very well with wikis and FAQs. To explain more complex problems, the provision of short learning units (learning nuggets) is an excellent option. Effective performance support enables the unobstructed execution of work processes and helps to make the whole workforce more efficient.

4) Assemble your own eLearning authoring team

Especially for large companies it can be appropriate to assemble an in-house eLearning authoring team. Because the authors are recruited from the company itself, they are already proficient with the corporate culture and are able to apply it when creating eLearning courses or learning nuggets. With the help of an authoring tool that enables the creation of courses in responsive design, this team can develop learning units for the whole staff in relatively short periods of time.

5) Use blended learning for in-house training

Blended learning is one of the most popular training methods nowadays, because it combines the advantages of electronic learning and traditional classroom training and reduces the individual disadvantages at the same time. If your company already uses classroom training, it doesn't take much effort to support it with the creation of eLearning units. The learning matter can then be studied with eLearning and the seminars can be used to deepen the knowledge. Through the mixture of methods, various learning types are served which leads to a higher retention rate. Through mobile learning, employees can access the courses anytime and from anywhere to refresh their knowledge or practice the exercises.

6) Make use of the gamification principle

The principle of gamification uses the human ludic drive as a means of increasing motivation. For this purpose, game mechanics (leaderboards, digital badges or mini-games) are included in the courses or learning environments. This creates additional incentives to finish the learning modules successfully. The awarding of certificates can offer an additional appeal.
