Gamification elements for the learning management system ILIAS

E-Learning measures can provide tremendous advantages for an enterprise, if they are implemented and executed properly. The competencies of the employees improve, workflows are understood and followed and the company´s overall efficiency rises. The business objectives will be achieved faster or even exceeded.

Especially when imparting dry knowledge, it is necessary to present the learning matter in an attractive way to avoid boredom or reluctance on the learner´s side. The use of playful elements has proven especially effective in practice. The possibilities range from a simple quiz to the transformation of the whole learning platform into a gaming environment.

For the "ILIAS" learning management system ILT Solutions developed an innovative navigation in the form of a map, that is loosely based on the game classic "SimCity".

The course units are represented by houses on this map. Several houses form a settlement, that represents a topic. Courses can be selected either directly or topic-related. Clicking on "target group" highlights the learning modules, that are relevant for the specific target group.

Alternatively, there is also the option to create individual learning paths. A specific succession of courses is determined for the individual learner to work on. The learning path is depicted on the map as a car driving on the set route.

Together with the certification of training successes, the town map addon presents the possibility to achieve a significant increase of learning motivation with relatively low effort.
